Extension Module: Fun with Your iPod

 

Overview

Let's get you up and running with some iPod fun. You will need to get familiar with iTunes to add your own music files as well as for purchasing music, books, and podcasts from the iTunes Store or by using an iTunes Gift Certificate.

 

For those ready for more iPod fun, you will need information about the iPod recorders and the Moodle iPodcast module. Once you are an iPod fan, you'll want to be in the know on all things iPod so, there are some fun sites, blogs, and resources to get you going.

 

 

Standards & Benchmarks

Standard: The teacher has the prerequisite technology skills to teach online.

Benchmark: The teacher demonstrates growth in technology knowledge and skills in order to stay current with emerging technologies.

 

 

Objectives

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • download and install iTunes software
  • import music from personally owned CDs
  • use an iTunes Gift Certificate
  • use an iTunes account

 

 

Activities

  1. Download and install iTunes software
  2. Import music from personally owned CDs
    • insert your CD, it should show up in the menu on the left
    • Create a New Playlist by going to File > New Playlist
    • Title the Playlist based on your CD
    • Drag and drop your CD onto your newly titled Playlist
    • This takes a bit of time, the files are grey until they finish downloading
  3. iTunes Gift Certificate or iTunes Gift Card
    • Click on iTunes Store in menu on left

    • Find Quick Links on the upper right and click on Redeem

    • Select the appropriate gift
    • Type in the code you have been provided
    • Find a cool song and buy it
    • You can do a Search to find what you like (upper right corner)
    • You can select a Genre
      • In the iTunes store box, click on Music, scroll down a bit until you see Genres on the left
  4. Use an iTunes account
    • Open iTunes
    • Go to File Menu > Store > Create Account
    • Create your account (this means providing credit card information)
    • Find music, books, and video (video won't play on Nanos but will play on your computer)
    • Buy something you like

Advanced Activities

iPod Recorders

  1. Pick and purchase a recorder
  2. Make a recording
    • Record
      • Attach the recorder to your iPod
      • Select Record
      • Record yourself saying something to your OTLO group
      • Select Pause if you need to stop and continue
      • When you're done, select Stop and Save
      • You can now select the created audio file to Play or Delete
    • Turn Voice Memos into mp3 files
      • Attach your iPod to your computer
      • Say yes when iTunes asks if you want to download your Voice Memos
      • You now will have two Voice Memo playlists in your menu on the left, find the one under Playlists
      • Your new Recording will be in the Voice Memo playlist, titled by the date and time it was created
      • Consider renaming this file, by clicking on the file to select it and then clicking again and pressing until you can edit the title
      • Click on the file to select the file
      • Go to the File Menu > Advanced > Convert Selection to mp3
        • If it says Convert Selection to AAC then go to File > Edit > Preferences > Advanced
        • Where it says Import Using, select MP3 in the dropdown menu, click OK
        • You can also just right-click on the file to convert it.
      • Go to the menu on the left in iTunes then go to Library > Music
      • Do a search for the name you gave the file
      • Go to View > View Options
      • Make sure Kind is selected
      • The one that says MPEG audio file is the one you want
      • If you give it an artist and album name, you can find this file in My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > Artist Folder > Album Folder. For example, I put Julia Parra in the Artist area and OTLO in the Album area for my test file.
      • You can also drag and drop this file to your desktop if you don't yet know how to find your iTunes music folder.
      • You can now Podcast this file or simply upload it somewhere.
  3. Try uploading your file (if it is a small file) using the Moodle iPodcast activity module.
